The 1 inch tall backplate is perfect for shelves 1 1/2 inch thick such as 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, 2x10 and 2x12. These, like all floating shelf brackets, are best mounted to studs over Sheetrock. They are designed and manufactured more for light weight to medium-duty decorative purposes.

However, these small brackets deliver a lot of strength in comparison to other floating shelf brackets of similar size. They hold 45 lbs per stud they are attached to. The 5 rod length is perfect for floating shelf depths 6-10 and the 7 rod length will work for 8-12 shelf depths.
