Water may be used with the Matisse colours. However, the addition of more than 30-50% water to Matisse Colours will reduce not only their colour strength (which, of course, is generally the required result) but will also reduce the "binding" capacity of the Matisse colours. This may lead to the Matisse colours becoming water-sensitive.
MM9 Acrylic Painting Medium is used in addition with equal parts water to ensure the Matisse Colours remain waterfast when they are reduced for glazing or any other purpose where water is added to the paint. MM9 Acrylic Painting Medium with its low sheen and good adhesion makes it a suitable transparent primer or surface conditioner for canvas, paper or board.
